Valley Society’s Black writing group meets monthly as part of our Field Day series—an intentional rhythm of walking, sharing food, and writing in community.
Field Day Schedule:
- Morning Hike – A local trail walk to awaken the senses
- Brunch – A shared meal, usually hosted in a member’s home or local space
- Writing Group – An in-person writing session using the Amherst Writers & Artists method
These sessions are designed for Black writers in the Pioneer Valley—whether you’re just beginning or already deep in your work. We gather to reflect, write, and support each other. Field Days are limited in size to preserve intimacy and focus.
Frequency: Monthly
Day: Sundays
Location: In-person, hosted by members in and around Central and Western Massachusetts
Facilitator: Christopher J. Sparks
Method: Amherst Writers & Artists
Valley Society’s AWA black writing group holds weekly sessions and records quarterly podcasts.
Facilitated by Christopher J. Sparks

I grew up in Northampton, MA through the 1980s and 90s. I have always written but never considered myself a writer. My parents met at UMass, from which I graduated in 2012 and where I work today. I write poetry as well as some history and occasionally essays. I have been a part of many writing groups of the years and they have always been an important part of making enough room for my work. You can read my writing at ChristopherJSparks.com
If interested fill out the form below and we will get back to you. Its a good idea to have a few writing examples and expect to touch base over Zoom before being admitted into the group.
